Terrace is an extract from Journey to Italy (1954) Dir. Roberto Rossellini, accompanied by a text printed.
The video which is shown on a cube monitor consists of a short episode in Rosellini’s film where the couple are taken out to admire the view which the Bay of Naples in the distance. The host points out two or three of the surrounding geographic features. The couple glance at it, comment and the party return inside.
The video extract is played in continuous mode with a short black interval between each play. The text in print transposes the host’s commentary to a view of the Straits of Gibraltar from a high viewing platform which encompasses an airstrip, a Bay, mainland and similar features to those described in the video.
The video draws on the Mediterranean as a topography and geography of sameness and mutability.
